Oh gosh, where has the time gone! It seems as though it was only a few days ago that I was writing about our winter weather, yet today it could almost be spring! In one week we’ve transitioned from icy nights and brisk days, to 30C where a dip in the ocean is the only way we can cool down! I must admit, I find it all rather disturbing, and I can see our garden does too. The roses we pruned back heavily only a few weeks ago now have tiny pink shoots on them; our orange trees are already forming flower buds for next season; and the mulberry is covered in a fuzz of green fruit. It’s all very confusing!
However, the birds love it, and as I write this, the branches of the grevillea outside my office are alive with them as they feed on the nectar-filled blooms. I’ve become a bit of a bird nerd in the years since we moved here, and their toing and froing is a constant delight. Although I have to admit that just occasionally I’m tempted to shoo them away when I find we’re vying for the same treats in the garden. Right now, we’re waging war over the strawberries, and it’s a daily battle to see who gets to them first! Although I had to smile to myself this morning, as I watched a rather splendid magpie stroll nonchalantly over to the strawberry bed and fastidiously pluck only the very ripest ones off their stems. I should have frightened him away, but a part of me was so happy to see this, and I figure there are plenty for all of us.
I just wish I could be out in the garden enjoying all this activity, but right now I have a rather exciting project that’s taking up my time. Recently, I heard lovely news about my book, Mix & Bake. My publisher has asked me to do a new, updated edition including another 20 recipes, which will be published next May. So I’ve got my skates on, cooking, photographing and writing recipes for it, and I’d have to say that I love being in the world of cakes, pastries, bread and biscuits once again. (My neighbours are rather happy about it too, as I ferry sample plates of cake up and down the road for everyone to try!) So I thought it seemed appropriate that this month’s recipe is for one of the simplest, but most satisfying little cakes ever - delicate sugar and spice madeleines. I hope you enjoy them!

Saturday 13th August SOLD OUT
I taught for the first time at Kitchen to Table last year, and I'm so glad to be returning to this lovely shop and cooking school in Yamba. This is an intimate demonstration class (read much chat and laughter!) where I'll put together a simple but delicious lunch using local ingredients. (BTW, I have a new cookbook coming out in October 2016 so you may well get a sneak peek at a recipe or two from it!).

They’ve been under wraps for a long while, but I’m thrilled to announce that I shall be teaching two baking classes at Tamsin Carvan’s beautiful farm cooking school, Tamsin’s Table. I'm pinching myself that I'm returning again to the wonderful Agrarian Kitchen Cooking School in Tasmania to teach two more baking classes on Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th of September. (At this stage the classes are full however there is a waiting list in case of cancellations). This beautiful school is one of my all-time favourite places to teach, and their holistic paddock-to-plate philosophy resonates strongly with me. My lovely sister-in-law, Fiona Jeffery, started this international water aid charity in 1998 when she learnt that less than $2 can deliver clean water to a child for up to 10 years. From this knowledge, and her passion and commitment, Just a Drop was born, based on the premise that if people can be encouraged to give a little then collectively we can make a huge difference. I’m so proud of all she has achieved over the years and encourage you to visit the site and see the fantastic work they do.
